The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly rejected claims made by United States President Donald Trump alleging widespread killings of Christians and calling for Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern.”

In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, described Trump’s remarks as “inaccurate and inconsistent with the realities on the ground.”

Nigeria Defends Its Record on Religious Freedom

Ebienfa stated that Nigerians of different faiths have long coexisted peacefully, adding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains committed to upholding human rights and religious freedom.

“Under the leadership of President Tinubu, Nigeria remains committed to fighting terrorism, strengthening interfaith harmony, and protecting the lives and rights of all its people,” the statement read.

The spokesperson emphasized that while Nigeria welcomes global concern about human rights and security, foreign partners must ensure their assessments are based on verified information.

“While Nigeria appreciates international concern for human rights and religious freedom, these claims do not reflect the situation on the ground,” Ebienfa reiterated.

FG Seeks Constructive Engagement with Washington

According to the Ministry, the Federal Government is open to dialogue with the U.S. government to promote better understanding of Nigeria’s complex security challenges.

“Nigeria will continue to engage constructively with the Government of the United States to deepen mutual understanding of regional dynamics and the country’s ongoing peace and security efforts,” Ebienfa said.

He further called on international partners to rely on credible data and recognize Nigeria’s continuous efforts to counter violent extremism and foster national unity.
