A Nigerian woman has stirred conversations online after revealing that her mother-in-law planted a plantain tree using her newborn’s umbilical cord — a gesture she described as both surprising and symbolic.

A Unique Family Tradition

In a TikTok video shared by user @mrsmajesty01, the new mother showed the exact spot where the plantain tree was planted shortly after she gave birth.

According to her, the act was part of a cultural tradition believed to bring blessings, growth, and prosperity to the newborn and the family.

She humorously captioned the clip:

“Come see, my mother-in-law don use my son’s umbilical cord plant plantain for him. When e reach your turn, throway am. We go too chop plantain next year.”

Mixed Online Reaction

While some viewers found the practice fascinating and rooted in heritage, others expressed surprise and skepticism.

Responding to comments, the woman explained that the gesture was “just a fun family custom”, comparing it to “opening an account for a child’s future.”

She added that she’s excited to see the plantain tree grow, saying it would serve as a reminder of her son’s birth and symbolize fruitful blessings in the years to come.

A separate viral post reported that a wedding was called off following a disagreement between a bride and her future mother-in-law. The dispute reportedly began after the bride, Adefemi Taiwo Damilola, refused to call her fiancé’s 11-year-old niece “Aunty,” insisting the title was unnecessary since the child was much younger than her.
